- After the execution of Charles I in 1649, England became a republic, known as the Commonwealth of England, under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell.
- Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland, ruled from 1653 to 1658, and during his rule, he:
- Dissolved the Rump Parliament in 1653
- Established the Instrument of Government, a constitutional document that granted him executive power
- Divided England into military districts, each governed by a major-general
- Conquered Ireland and Scotland, incorporating them into the Commonwealth
- In 1660, following the death of Oliver Cromwell's son, Richard, and the collapse of the Commonwealth, General George Monck restored the monarchy, and Charles II, son of Charles I, was declared king of England.
