Declaration of Independence and Self-Governance

The Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, marked the beginning of the United States' journey towards independence. This document, which is celebrated annually on the Fourth of July, emphasizes the importance of self-governance in securing individual rights. It states that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed and that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.

Tribal Self-Governance

However, during the termination era, the US government sought to terminate the tribal governments' status as nations and forced many tribes to assimilate individually into the larger social-political society. This era was characterized by the relocation of Native Americans from reservations to big cities, where they were expected to assimilate into the dominant culture.

However, the rights to self-determination have started to gain more attention in recent years, with tribes seeking greater autonomy in governance. The Indian Health Care Programs were moved from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to the Public Health Education and Welfare (now the Department of Health and Human Services), and the rights to self-governance have been recognized and sustained by the courts of the United States.

Self-Determination Movements

Self-determination movements have been a significant force in shaping the modern world. These movements, which seek to create independent countries, merge with another country, or achieve greater autonomy within an existing country, have been driven by a belief that the existing government cannot or will not meet their needs.
