Study Notes
Lymphatic System
- Lymphatic vessels allow for the percolation of interstitial fluid through lymph nodes, enabling the immune system to detect pathogens, infectious agents, or cancer cells.
Characteristics of Lymphatic Vessels
- Red blood cells are absent in lymphatic vessels because they never exit capillaries.
- Lymphatic vessels have valves, similar to veins, which facilitate one-way flow.
Lymphatic Drainage
- Fluid from the RIGHT side of the body drains into the right lymphatic duct, then into veins, and finally into the right atrium via the superior vena cava.
- Fluid from the LEFT side of the body drains into the larger lymph vessel, the left thoracic duct, which empties into the superior vena cava.
- The left thoracic duct also drains the abdominal cavity, including fluid from the digestive system.
Cisterna Chyli Fluid
- Cisterna chyli fluid is rich in fats, originating from the small intestines.
- Villi, small, finger-like projections in the small intestine, enhance fat absorption.
- Filariasis, a parasitic infection, can clog lymphatic vessels as parasitic roundworms take up residence inside them.
