The Story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50
- God continued to fulfill his promise to Abraham.
- Isaac, his son, married Rebecca. Isaac and Rebecca had two sons Esau and Jacob.
- Jacob had four wives and thirteen children: one girl (Dinah) and twelve boys. The boys' names were Joseph, Rueben, Naphtali, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Zebulum, Judah, Benjamin, Asher, Levi, and Simeon. These brothers became the leaders of the 12 tribes of Israel.
- Jacob loved Rachel the best. Of the thirteen children, Jacob loved Rachel's two sons, Benjamin and Joseph, the best. Joseph was the favourite.
- Joseph knew that he was his father's favourite and even had special dreams that predicted the future.
- His brothers were jealous of him, and one day they sold him as a slave to a passing caravan for twenty pieces of silver.
- The brothers dipped Joseph's coat in the blood of a goat and tore it up. They took the bloody coat back to their father Jacob and told him that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.
- The slave traders made Joseph march for days to the land of Egypt, where they sold him as a slave to Potiphar, the highest guard in Pharaoh's command.
- Potiphar put Joseph in charge of his household and land, but after a while, Potiphar became angry with Joseph and put him in jail.
- In jail, Joseph met two men who were also imprisoned. One was Pharaoh's cupbearer and the other the baker. Both men had dreams, and Joseph was able to interpret the dreams for them.
- The cupbearer would be returned to his position in three days. The baker would be put to death and beheaded.
- Joseph's story in Genesis 37-50 is a tale of family relationships, jealousy, betrayal, and faith in God's plan.
