The Intolerable Acts
- Passed in 1774, the Intolerable Acts were a series of five laws meant to prevent the Americans from gaining independence.
- The five laws were:
- The Quartering Act: English soldiers could stay in colonial buildings and homes at the colonists' expense.
- The Impartial Administration of Justice Act: English officials accused of crimes in the colonies could stand trial in England.
- Massachusetts Government Act: royal governors and the king would appoint all government officers.
- Quebec Act: granted religious freedom to Canadians and awarded some of the colonial territory to the Province of Quebec.
- Boston Port Act: closed the Boston port until the tea lost during the Boston Tea Party was paid for.
- The Intolerable Acts closed down Boston Harbor, made trials in the colonies difficult, and allowed English soldiers to invade colonists' homes.
