Gandalf's Departure and Meeting Beorn
- Gandalf announces his departure from the company, but promises to help them find food and ponies before leaving
- He leads the company to the house of Beorn, a half-man, half-bear creature who lives in the woods outside Mirkwood
- Beorn is a powerful being who has a great wooden house and is a shapeshifter, able to change into many creatures and speak their native language
Beorn's Hospitality
- Beorn offers the company food and lodging, and they are greeted by many animals who serve under Beorn in return for protection
- The company has dinner and spends the night at Beorn's home
Preparing for Mirkwood
- Bilbo wakes up to strange noises outside, but goes back to sleep
- The next morning, Gandalf and Beorn share their findings with the company, warning them of an attack party of Wargs and goblins
- Beorn recommends taking the northern pass (the elf path) through Mirkwood, which will bring them near the Lonely Mountain
- He warns the group to never stray from the path, as it is not entirely safe
Departure for Mirkwood
- Beorn provides the group with food and ponies to carry them to the gate at the start of the path
- Gandalf departs, wishing the company the best and reminding them to stay on the path
- The dwarves and Bilbo begin their journey into Mirkwood, aware of the dark things that lurk in the forest
