The Guns of Fort Sumter
The "Gunnies" were not actually a specific historical term, but rather slang referring to soldiers who served with the Union Army during the American Civil War. However, it is worth discussing some key events involving the famous gun batteries on Fort Sumter.
Fort Sumter stands out as one of the most significant sites related to the start of the Civil War due to its role in the first shots fired on April 12, 1861. The fort itself was located in Charleston Harbor and had been abandoned by the US military after a series of failed supply missions. This abandonment led to Confederate forces taking control of the site.
When President Abraham Lincoln learned of this development, he ordered Major Robert Anderson to remain in command of Fort Sumter with minimal resources. Lincoln hoped that the South would eventually give up their occupation of federal property. Instead, on January 9, 1861, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard demanded that Major Anderson surrender immediately. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Anderson decided to hold out until reinforcements arrived.
Anderson's decision proved fateful when, on April 12, 1861, Confederate guns opened fire on Fort Sumter. The Union ships nearby returned fire, leading to the first major battle of the war. A ceasefire was called later that day, and negotiations began over the return of the fort. On April 26, 1861, a truce ended hostilities, securing Fort Sumter and establishing Charleston as a stronghold for the Confederacy.
While the actual "guns of Fort Sumter" did not directly relate to the term "Gunnies," these events marked the beginning of the Civil War and introduced the world to the concept of soldiers dedicated to protecting federal interests from rebelling states - hence the unofficial nickname of "Union soldiers."
