The First Red Scare
- The Russian Revolution and post-war labor strikes in the US contributed to growing tensions leading to the Red Scare in 1919 and 1920.
Events Leading to the Red Scare
- Thirty-six packages containing dynamite-filled bombs were mailed to prominent politicians, judges, government officials, newspaper editors, and businessmen, including John D. Rockefeller.
The Bombs
- Most bombs were discovered by the post office before delivery.
- One bomb mailed from New York City to a former US senator's home in Atlanta exploded, severely injuring the maid and the senator's wife.
The Palmer Raids
- From November 1919 to January 1920, US Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer led the Palmer Raids.
- Over 5,000 people were arrested, and more than 500 were deported.
- Those arrested were mostly anarchists, communists, and labor activists, primarily recent Italian and eastern European immigrants.
The Wall Street Bombing
- In September 1920, a bomb exploded on Wall Street in New York City's financial district, several months after the Palmer Raids.
