  • Consists of one pair of kidneys, a pair of ureters, a urinary bladder, and a urethra.

Kidneys

  • Filter blood to produce urine.
  • Dark-red, bean-shaped organs.
  • Each kidney measures 10 cm long, 5 cm wide, and 4 cm thick.
  • Weighs about 120 grams.
  • Located against the back wall of the abdominal cavity, just below the diaphragm.
  • One kidney is on either side of the vertebral column.
  • Protected by the last two ribs.
  • The left kidney is slightly higher than the right.
  • The concave side of the kidney faces the vertebral column.
  • Has a depression called the hilus, near the center of the concave area.
  • The hilus is the area where the ureter leaves the kidney and other structures, including blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, enter.
