The Excretory System (Urinary System)
- Consists of one pair of kidneys, a pair of ureters, a urinary bladder, and a urethra.
Kidneys
- Filter blood to produce urine.
- Dark-red, bean-shaped organs.
- Each kidney measures 10 cm long, 5 cm wide, and 4 cm thick.
- Weighs about 120 grams.
- Located against the back wall of the abdominal cavity, just below the diaphragm.
- One kidney is on either side of the vertebral column.
- Protected by the last two ribs.
- The left kidney is slightly higher than the right.
- The concave side of the kidney faces the vertebral column.
- Has a depression called the hilus, near the center of the concave area.
- The hilus is the area where the ureter leaves the kidney and other structures, including blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, enter.
