Digestive System
The digestive system is responsible for processing food consumed by living organisms. It breaks down complex molecules into simpler ones through a series of chemical reactions called digestion. This process allows the body to absorb nutrients from food, which it uses for energy, growth, and cell repair.
Key components of the digestive system include:
- Mouth: This is where the process begins with chewing. Saliva from the mouth contains enzymes like amylase that break down carbohydrates before swallowing.
- Esophagus: A tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Muscles move food downward by contracting and relaxing.
- Stomach: Secretes hydrochloric acid and pepsin to further break down proteins. Gastrin is also produced here, stimulating the secretion of gastric juice.
- Small intestine: The longest part of the digestive tract. Most nutrient absorption occurs here via pinocytosis, active transport, and diffusion.
- Liver and gallbladder: They produce bile, a mixture of water, electrolytes, mucus, bicarbonate, cholesterol, phospholipids, bilirubin, taurine conjugated bilirubin, gamma glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase, lecithin cholesterol acetyltransferase, and lipoprotein lipase.
- Pancreas: Produces enzymes necessary for digestion.
- Large intestine/colon: Absorbs water and some electrolytes while fermenting undigested fiber using bacteria.
- Rectum and anus: Eliminate waste products through defecation.
Digestion involves multiple stages: ingestion, mechanical breakdown, chemical breakdown, absorption, and elimination. Ingestion includes chewing and swallowing. Mechanical breakdown occurs in the esophagus and intestines, while chemical breakdown happens in the stomach and small intestine. Absorption occurs primarily in the small intestine, followed by elimination in the large intestine. Nutrients absorbed include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water.
