    Study Notes

    Cell Membrane Components

    • Cell Wall is not a part of the cell membrane. It is a rigid structure found outside the cell membrane in plant cells, bacteria, fungi, and some protists.
    • Cell Membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer, integral proteins, peripheral proteins, cholesterol, and glycolipids.

    Cell Membrane Function

    • The cell membrane acts as a selective barrier regulating the passage of molecules into and out of the cell, maintaining homeostasis.
    • It is also involved in cell communication, cell recognition, and cell adhesion.

    Integral Proteins

    • Integral proteins are permanently embedded within the phospholipid bilayer.
    • They have hydrophobic regions that interact with the lipid tails of the membrane and hydrophilic regions that interact with the aqueous environment.
    • Integral proteins act as channels, transporters, receptors, and enzymes.

    Peripheral Proteins

    • Peripheral proteins are temporarily attached to the surface of the cell membrane, either to the inner or outer leaflet.
    • They are often associated with integral proteins and play a role in cell signaling, enzymatic activity, and structural support.

    Glycolipids

    • Glycolipids are lipids with carbohydrate chains attached to their polar head groups.
    • Their primary function is cell recognition and adhesion.
    • They are also involved in immune responses and tissue development.
