The 5 Themes of Geography
Location
- Refers to where something is on the Earth's surface
- Has two types:
- Absolute Location: exact position using latitude and longitude coordinates or an address
- Relative Location: position in relation to other landmarks or features
Place
- Refers to physical and human characteristics of a location
- Includes both natural and human-made features
- Characteristics of a place help us understand its uniqueness and how people interact with the environment
- Examples of place characteristics:
- Physical Features: mountains, rivers, deserts, forests
- Human-Made Features: buildings, roads, bridges, cities
Human-Environment Interaction
- Explores how people interact with and modify their environment
- Includes how humans adapt to the environment, modify it to meet their needs, and how the environment influences human activities
- Examples of human-environment interaction:
- Building dams to control rivers and generate electricity
- Constructing irrigation systems to water crops in arid regions
- Creating national parks to preserve natural resources
Movement
- Refers to the movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another
- Includes migration, trade, communication, and the spread of culture
- Examples of movement:

Region
- Refers to an area with common characteristics that set it apart from other areas
