Parent Taught Drivers Ed (PTDE) Overview
- PTDE stands for Parent Taught Drivers Education.
- Regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
PTDE Packet Contents
- Contains rules for the PTDE program and necessary forms for participation.
Licensing Fees
- Total fees include $20 for DL-92, $75-100 for Aceable, $16 for the permit, and $11 for the license.

Instruction Methods
- Concurrent Method: Complete the first 6 hours before obtaining a permit, then finish the course and driving hours together.
- Block Method: Take all 32 hours of the course prior to obtaining a permit, then complete driving requirements.
Aceable Program Configuration
- Aceable defaults to the concurrent method; students wishing to use the block method must contact the provider after completing the course.
Age Requirements
- Minimum age to start PTDE is 14; permit can be obtained at 15, and a driver’s license at 16.
- PTDE is valid for individuals between 14 and 24 years old; for ages 18-24, adult driver education is recommended.
Instructor Eligibility
- Eligible instructors include parents, step-parents, grandparents, foster parents, legal guardians, or individuals designated by such parties.
- Must hold a valid Texas driver license for at least three years and not have recent DUI or traffic-related convictions.
Invalid Instructor Scenario
- If an instructor is found ineligible, all instruction becomes invalid, and the student must find a new instructor or switch to Instructor Taught Drivers Ed.
Out-of-State Instructor Eligibility
- Parents with out-of-state or international licenses must provide a driving history record showing three years of driving experience.
Instructional Hours Requirements
- Classroom instruction requires a total of 32 hours.
- Behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction requires 44 hours in total.
Observation Hours
- Of the 44 BTW hours, 7 are spent on in-car student observation and another 7 hours for parent observation of the student.
- Total observation hours required for PTDE are 14.
Practice Hours
- Out of the 44 BTW hours, 30 hours must be dedicated to practice driving.
