- Tones are pitches used in Mandarin language that make a huge difference in learning.
- There are four different tones that can change the meaning of a word.
- The first tone is a higher than normal flat pitch.
- The second tone is a rising pitch that begins at your normal speaking pitch and rises.
- The third tone is a falling & rising tone that begins at your normal pitch, falls, & then rises.
- The fourth tone is a falling pitch that usually begins at a higher than normal pitch and falls softly.
- Distinguishing between the various tones is quite a challenge.
- Native Chinese speakers sometimes have difficulty distinguishing between the second and third tone.
- The third tone when combined in a particular sequence, no longer is a third tone.
- Training your ear over time is necessary to be able to tell the difference between the tones.
