Reporting Various Types of Income on Your Tax Return
- Bartering is legal and taxable in the United States, and the fair market value of the goods or services received must be reported on Form 1040, Schedule 1, Line 8.
- Bribes and kickbacks are illegal and must be reported as income on Form 1040, Schedule 1, Line 8.
- Cancellation of debt income (COD income) must be reported on your tax return as income, and the amount of COD income is the amount of debt that was canceled, forgiven, or discharged.
- Gambling winnings must be reported on Form 1040, Schedule 1, Line 21, and if winnings are $600 or more, the payer must provide a Form W-2G.
- Hobby income is considered taxable income and must be reported on Form 1040, Schedule 1, Line 8.
- All income, including income from illegal activities, must be reported on your tax return.
- Jury duty pay, rental of personal property, court awards and damages, and prizes and awards must be reported as income.
