Different Types of Injections and Their Administration
- Intradermal injections are given into the skin between the epidermal and dermal layers and are used for immunological diagnostic tests or the injection of tuberculin protein.
- Subcutaneous injections are administered into the loose connective and adipose tissues immediately beneath the dermal skin layer and are used for aqueous solutions or suspensions of drugs such as insulin.
- Intramuscular injections are administered into the tissue of a relaxed muscle and are used for aqueous or oily solutions or suspensions of drugs in volumes of up to 4 mL.
- Intraspinal injections are given between the vertebrae of the spine into the area of the spinal column and are used for drugs in aqueous solution, such as antibiotics or anticancer agents.
- Intrathecal injections are administered into the cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space and are used for spinal anesthesia or to introduce drug substances into the CSF that would not diffuse across the blood-brain barrier.
- Intracisternal injections are given between the atlas and axis vertebrae into the cisterna magna and are used for antibiotic administration or to withdraw CSF for diagnostic purposes.
- Epidural injections or infusions are given into the peridural space and are commonly used for spinal anesthesia, such as during childbirth.
- Intra-articular injections are given into the synovial fluid of joint cavities and are used for aqueous solutions or suspensions of anti-inflammatory drugs to treat arthritic conditions or sports injuries.
- Ophthalmic injections are administered either around or into the eye.
- Subconjunctival injections are administered under the conjunctiva or into the skin surrounding the eye, usually of 1 mL or less.
- Intracameral injections are given into the anterior chamber of the eye and can be from 0.1 mL to 1 mL in volume.
- Intravitreal injections are given into the vitreous chamber behind the lens of the eye.
