Characteristics and Handling Procedures of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
- LNG has a boiling point of –260°F and is stored at around -220°F, depending on tank pressure and other minor factors.
- LNG vapor’s flammable range is from 5.3% to 15% vapor in the air.
- LNG is an odorless, colorless, non-toxic and non-corrosive liquid, but its vapor can displace oxygen and cause severe frostbite if inhaled.
- The LNG to gas vapor ratio is 1:640, and LNG weighs about 42% that of water.
- LNG reaches its boiling point rapidly and can produce a flammable vapor cloud if spilled to the ground.
- The visible fog produced during LNG vaporization serves as an indication of the approximate travel of the methane vapors.
- LNG initially vaporizes as a heavy gas and eventually becomes lighter than air and rises.
- LNG has a violent reaction with water and water spray, which can result in an explosion-like reaction.
- Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn whenever handling LNG, including safety glasses, gloves, long sleeve shirts, protective outer garments, and boots.
- In the case of a substantial LNG spill, all sources of ignition should be eliminated, and the area should be evacuated.
- New operators must receive initial training, and all operators must be reevaluated periodically through on-the-job training, online training modules, SOP review, oral and written examinations.
- All training records for employees must be maintained by the company.
