MLA Formatting Rules and Guidelines
- Paper size: 5 x 11-inch with 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font, one-half inch indentation, and double-spaced
- Margins: set to one inch on all sides for hard copy assignments
- Binding: staples and paper binders at the top-left corner for hard copy assignments
- Instructor's preferences: inquire about the preferred way of writing and using MLA
- Title page: includes writer's details, addressed to, date, and title, centered, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 font, no page number
- Headings: provide basis for subsequent headers and sections, formatting for levels 1-4
- Header and page number: every page requires a page number on the top-right with the student's last name/surname
- In-text citations: use author's last name and page number in parentheses, or use full names in a sentence with page number in parenthesis/brackets
- Quotations: short quotes in double quotation marks with author's last name and page number, long quotes as a block of indented lines with author's last name and page number at the end
- Use quotes sparingly and paraphrase content when possible
- Paraphrasing: use another person's work in different words, cite with author's last name and page number
- Works Cited Page: appears as the last section in a separate page, listing the bibliography information of sources used
