- Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by chronic, excessive and unreasonable worry about multiple life events or activities.
- It is not anchored to a specific object or situation as in phobias.
- Individuals with GAD are persistently anxious often about minor items, and worry chronically.
- People with GAD spend a great deal of time worrying about a wide range of topics and describe their worrying as uncontrollable.
- DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for GAD include excessive anxiety and worry about a number of events or activities for at least 6 months, difficulty controlling the worry, and associated symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances.
- The focus of the anxiety and worry is not confined to features of an Axis I disorder.
- The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
- The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance or a general medical condition.
- Only one symptom is required in children.
- GAD can be diagnosed using the DSM-5 criteria.
