Elections in Antigua and Barbuda: Calling, Candidates, Campaign, and Voting

• The Prime Minister can call for general elections at any time, but no more than five years can lapse between elections.
• All seats in the House of Representatives are vacant, and the party with the most seats forms the government.
• By-elections are held when a member of Parliament dies or resigns.
• The Prime Minister has the power to dissolve Parliament when they think their party has the best chance of winning a general election.
• Anyone who is an Antiguan and Barbudan citizen, 21 years or older, and has resided in the country for 12 months preceding the election can stand as a candidate.
• Candidates must be nominated on an official nomination paper submitted on Nomination Day, either for an established political party or as an independent.
• The formal campaign period lasts between three and six weeks, with informal campaigning starting much earlier.
• During the campaign, political parties publish manifestos outlining their policies on major issues.
• Antigua and Barbuda has universal adult suffrage, and voting is by secret ballot.
• Voters can vote for candidates running in each of the 17 single-seat constituencies throughout Antigua and Barbuda.
• A party needs to win 9 constituencies to command a majority in the House of Representatives.
• Voting takes place on election day from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in polling stations located in public buildings such as schools and churches.
