9 Questions

What are the components of HVAC systems?

Furnaces, air conditioning units, and heat pumps

How do air conditioning units cool air?

By drawing it in and forcing it over evaporator coils filled with refrigerant

What is the purpose of air exchangers in HVAC systems?

To exchange stale air for fresh air to improve indoor air quality

What do heat pumps do?

Produce warm air by drawing cold outside air over refrigerant

What is the purpose of ducts in HVAC systems?

To carry air to various places around the home and provide an opening for the air to heat or cool the room

What is the purpose of a thermostat in HVAC systems?

To allow for temperature control

What is the purpose of supply fans in HVAC systems?

To push air into the ductwork and through the vents/registers

What is the purpose of humidification and dehumidification equipment in HVAC systems?

To control the level of humidity in the air

What is the purpose of the mixed-air plenum in HVAC systems?

To mix outdoor air with return air before it is conditioned

Study Notes

  1. HVAC systems contain various components, including furnaces, air conditioning units, heat pumps, and air exchangers.
  2. Other components include mixed-air plenum and outdoor air control, air filters, supply fans, exhaust or relief fans, outdoor air intake, ducts, terminal devices, and return air systems.
  3. Heating and cooling coils, self-contained heating or cooling units, cooling towers, boilers, controls, water chillers, and humidification and dehumidification equipment are also part of HVAC systems.
  4. Air conditioning units cool air by drawing it in and forcing it over evaporator coils filled with refrigerant.
  5. Heat pumps work similarly to air conditioners but can produce warm air by drawing cold outside air over refrigerant.
  6. Gas furnaces heat buildings by drawing air in through ducts and forcing it into the furnace where it is heated and blown back into the house.
  7. Air exchangers exchange stale air for fresh air to improve indoor air quality.
  8. Evaporator coils and coolant cool the coolant in AC units and heat pumps to cool homes.
  9. Vents/registers and ductwork carry air to various places around the home and provide an opening for the air to heat or cool the room.
  10. A thermostat allows for temperature control, and air handling units have various features such as double-sloped drain pans, non-corroding drain pans, easy access doors, and tightly sealed cabinets.
