Job Description for Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator

• The Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator investigates automobile crashes and handles traffic control.
• This is a paraprofessional position and does not involve carrying firearms or making arrests.
• The investigator's work is reviewed by the assigned Traffic Section supervisor.
• The immediate supervisor for the Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator is the District Support Division supervisor assigned to oversee the Traffic Section.
• The individual must have a high school diploma, experience in related work, traffic crash investigations, and public contact is preferred, and must pass a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.
• Knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances, departmental practices, rules and regulations, basic math, principles, practices, and methods of crash investigations, geographic characteristics and social aspects of the city, and radio signals are required.
• Abilities include dealing courteously with the public, preparing clear and concise reports, working with minimum supervision, carrying out supervisor instructions, developing administrative, technical, and investigative skills, remaining calm under stressful conditions, diagramming crash scenes, directing and controlling traffic flows, and issuing parking citations.
• Duties include responding to traffic crashes, gathering physical evidence, interviewing drivers, witnesses, and passengers, verifying driver's licenses and vehicle registrations, conducting a thorough investigation of traffic collisions, responding to hit-and-run crashes, completing all written documentation relating to crash reporting procedures, monitoring parking within the city limits and citing violators, assisting the State Attorney's Office in preparing for prosecution of traffic collision cases, participating in authorized and available training programs for assigned job duties and "on-the-job" skill enhancement, consulting and providing information and assistance regarding traffic crashes to police officers and other crash investigators, directing and controlling traffic as directed by a supervisor, answering calls for service and/or taking reports pertaining to specific incidents, covering vacancies created by school crossing guard absences, and performing other assignments as directed by supervisor.
• The uniform of the Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator consists of a light blue uniform shirt with dark blue uniform pants.
• The investigator will participate in periodic training related to their assigned job duties.
• If authorized to carry any specialized equipment, such as an expandable baton or OC spray, training will be provided on such equipment prior to issue and refresher training will be provided in accordance with FDLE and accreditation standards.
