  • The Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator investigates automobile crashes and handles traffic control.
  • This is a paraprofessional position and does not involve carrying firearms or making arrests.
  • The investigator's work is reviewed by the assigned Traffic Section supervisor.
  • The immediate supervisor for the Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator is the District Support Division supervisor assigned to oversee the Traffic Section.
  • The individual must have a high school diploma, experience in related work, traffic crash investigations, and public contact is preferred, and must pass a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances, departmental practices, rules and regulations, basic math, principles, practices, and methods of crash investigations, geographic characteristics and social aspects of the city, and radio signals are required.
  • Abilities include dealing courteously with the public, preparing clear and concise reports, working with minimum supervision, carrying out supervisor instructions, developing administrative, technical, and investigative skills, remaining calm under stressful conditions, diagramming crash scenes, directing and controlling traffic flows, and issuing parking citations.
