Identification and Recognition
- Badging: Model Y is identified by its badges and door handles; the model name is not on the rear. A "Dual Motor" badge might be on the trunk.
- Emblem: The Tesla emblem indicates an electric vehicle.
- VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): Located on the dashboard, driver's side windshield, driver's side door pillar, and sometimes under the passenger seat carpet.
Immobilization/Stabilization/Lifting
- Chock Wheels: Always chock wheels, as Model Y moves silently and can still be in motion even if it is in Park or Reverse.
- Park Position: Model Y should be placed into Park, and pressing the accelerator can cause quick acceleration. The parking brake engages automatically in the Park position and displays on the touchscreen.
- Do not Damage Battery Pack: Be careful not damage the battery pack while stabilizing/lifting the vehicle.
- Lift Areas: Only use designated lift areas when lifting or stabilizing the vehicle. Lift areas are shown in green in the diagram, and the high-voltage battery is located under the floor pan.
Access to Occupants & Disable Hazards
- Hood Opening: Follow steps for opening the hood.
- Disable the 12V battery: First responder loop must be double cut and the 12V battery disabled.
- High Voltage Component Warning: Not all high voltage components are labeled, always wear appropriate PPE. Do not attempt to open the High-Voltage (HV) battery.
- Cable Cut Procedures: Described for disengaging the airbag circuit for left-and right-hand drive vehicles.
Stored Energy/Liquids/Gases/Solids
- HV Battery: The high-voltage (HV) battery cells are sealed, and there is not enough electrolyte to create a pool of liquid.
- Coolant: Coolant is likely water and is blue in color.
- High Voltage Components (Diagram): Descriptions and locations of various components are shown in diagram form.
- High Voltage Battery Pack: The high-voltage battery is located under the floor pan.
High Voltage Power Cable/Component
- Orange Cables: High-voltage cables are shown in orange, and rescuers should not compromise these components.
- Drive Units: The rear drive unit is located between the rear wheels. The front drive unit is located between the front wheels.
Firefighting
- Do Not Submerge: Do not submerge the vehicle.
- Water Use: Use large amounts of water to cool the battery, or use CO2, dry chemicals, etc..
- Monitoring: Monitor the HV battery temperature for 24 hours.
- Foam: Tesla does not recommend using foam on electric vehicles.
Case of Submersion
- Handle Like Other Submerged Vehicles: Treat the vehicle as a regular submerged vehicle.
- Drain Water: Raise the vehicle’s front end to drain water.
- Vehicle Safety: Vehicles should be handled with extra care after submersion to avoid battery fire.
Towing/Transportation/Storage
- Wheel Spin: Do not let the wheels spin while transporting.
- Transport Mode: Enable Transport Mode on the touchscreen before winching onto a flatbed truck.
- Safety: Ensure safe distance to other vehicles from a fire incident or incident involving high voltage.
- Method: Use a roll-back truck or wheel lifts and dollies to carry the vehicle safely.
Important Additional Info
- PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Always use appropriate PPE and suitable tools.
- High Voltage Warning: Assume all high-voltage components are energized, and never cut, crush or touch them.
- High Voltage De-energization Time: High voltage de-energizes in 2 minutes after deactivation.
- Contact Us: Information provided and resources for first and second responders.
Explanation Pictograms
- Infrared (IR) Device: Explanation on how to use it in specific environments.
- Pictogram Descriptions: Descriptions for pictograms used throughout the guide.
