  • Periodontitis is an infection of the gums that can lead to tooth loss.
  • The disease is most commonly found in adults, but can occur in children and adolescents.
  • Extent and progression of periodontitis depends on the location and severity of the disease.
  • Therapeutic goals of periodontal therapy include the elimination of bacteria and contributing factors, preservation of state health, function, and stability, and prevention of disease recurrence.
  • Refractory form of periodontitis is a condition where periodontitis has been treated unsuccessfully and the patient continues to experience tooth loss.
  • There are several treatments for refractory periodontitis, which include patient education, behavior changes, periodontal instrumentation, systemic antibiotics, and/or local antibiotics.
  • The Periodontitis Case Definition includes the presence of clinical attachment loss at two or more teeth, OR facial or lingual clinical attachment loss of 3 mm or more with pocketing greater than 3 mm.
  • Pathophysiology has shown us three distinct forms of periodontitis: necrotizing periodontitis, periodontitis as a direct manifestation of systemic diseases, and periodontitis.
  • The Stage at presentation of a periodontitis case is based on disease severity, extent of disease at presentation, and complexity of management of the case.
