    Study Notes

Tamil is one of the most ancient classical languages still spoken today. It's believed to have originated around 750 BC on the Indian Subcontinent. There are over sixty million speakers of the Tamil language across the world, with the majority living in India. In addition to being a native script for Tamilians (those who speak Tamil), it's also used by many people of other linguistic backgrounds around the globe due to its widespread usage in various fields such as literature, education, media, and information technology.

The history of the Tamil language can trace itself back almost three thousand years. Its origins lie in what was once known as southern India. Today, Tamil is widely spoken throughout Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia, and smaller communities exist elsewhere, including Australia, Fiji, South Africa, Mauritius, France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, and the UAE. This spread has occurred mainly through migration from India to these countries, where there were already significant numbers of Tamil speakers present.

In modern times, regional television channels broadcasting programs solely in Tamil play a crucial role in preserving the cultural heritage of the community worldwide. These networks allow individuals to stay connected to their roots while experiencing life in their new homes. Furthermore, they help maintain strong ties between members within the diaspora communities and those still residing in Tamil Nadu, India and beyond. Additionally, satellite radio stations cater specifically to the needs of the global Tamil population.

Overall, Tamil remains a vibrant and influential language that continues to influence culture, society, politics, economy, religion, traditions, customs, beliefs, values, arts, music, literature, cinema, theatre, and so much more among Tamils globally.
