Tamil Language

The Tamil language is spoken primarily by people living in Southern India and Northeastern Sri Lanka. It belongs to the Dravidian family of languages, which also includes Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and other South Asian languages. Tamil has been recognized as one of the oldest and most ancient languages, with its origin being traced back to over 3700 years ago during the classical period. Writing System and Script

Tamil uses a writing system called Tamil script, which consists of characters representing syllables rather than individual letters. These symbols are written vertically left to right like Chinese characters. There are four types of scripts used today: Grantha, Pallava, Chera, and Chola. Each reflects different periods of time, extending from the prehistoric era up until modern times.

Dialects

There are three main dialects within the Tamil language: i) Northern Tamil spoke mostly in peninsular Malaysia; ii) Southern Tamil is considered high register and is widely understood across various regions; and iii) Central Tamil, which lies between these two with several nuances unique to itself. Additionally, there are numerous village-level accents.

Literature

Literary texts can be broadly classified under five categories: ancient (Sangam), medieval, early mediaeval, middle mediaeval, and recent literature. Tamil has produced many great works of poetry including those found in the Sangam corpus of literature, dating back to before 300 CE. In contemporary times, Tamil authors continue to create diverse forms of fiction, nonfiction, screenplays, stage plays, etc., enriching the world of Tamil literature.

Cultural Significance

Tamil has played a significant role in shaping cultural heritage throughout history. Its influence extends beyond linguistics, contributing greatly to art, music, dance, religion, science, philosophy, medicine, and architecture. For example, Tamil music traditionally features instruments such as violin, mridangam, veena, nadaswaram, and pipes.
