    Study Notes

Tamil is one of the world's most ancient languages with more than two thousand years of documented history. It originated from Proto-South Dravidian languages spoken by indigenous people during the Iron Age (around 500–350 BCE). In its current form, it has been used continuously since the beginning of the Common Era and is widely recognized as among the oldest living classical languages in Asia.

The Tamil language is primarily associated with the region of south India known as Tamil Nadu along with Puducherry and the neighbouring northern parts of Sri Lanka where Tamils also live. The Tamils belong to the Dravidian linguistic family which includes several South Indian languages such as Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Badaga, and others. This group of languages developed independently of Indo-European languages like Sanskrit, and linguists believe they were influenced by Austroasiatic languages.

One unique aspect of Tamil is that it uses three scripts: Tamil script, Grantha script, and Vatteluttu script. However, today, only the Tamil script is commonly used. Another characteristic feature is that Tamil writing runs left to right just like English whereas most Indian languages run horizontally. Additionally, there are different forms of Tamil including Tamil fiction, poetry, and colloquial speech.

Despite being written down for over twenty centuries, however, Tamil literature was largely oral until the invention of printing presses made reading materials accessible to all classes of society. After the advent of print technology, many aspects of Tamil culture gained popularity because the language became easier to learn through books rather than memorization. Today, the Tamil language remains extremely popular due to its antiquity, cultural heritage, usage in various contexts, and its spiritual significance within Hinduism.
