Flashcards

TH1 Function

Activates macrophages and CD8⁺ T cells, leading to cell-mediated immunity and delayed hypersensitivity.

TH2 Function

Activates B cells and promotes antibody class-switching for humoral immunity (antibody-mediated).

Naive TH cell

An inactive helper T cell that has not yet encountered an antigen.

Antigen-Presenting Cell (APC)

A cell that displays an antigen on its surface, activating a T cell.

TH cell Activation

Interaction between a T cell receptor (TCR) and antigen-MHC class II complex activates a naive Th cell, leading to differentiation into Th1 or Th2.

Study Notes

T Cell Subsets

  • TH1:

    • Immunity: Cell-mediated
    • Function: Activates macrophages and CD8+ T cells
    • Cytokines: IL-2, IFN-γ, lymphotoxin β
    • Result: Cytotoxicity; delayed hypersensitivity
  • TH2:

    • Immunity: Humoral (antibody-mediated)
    • Function: Activates B cells, promotes class switching
    • Cytokines: IL-4, 5, 10, & 13
    • Result: Secretion of antibodies
  • Naive T cells (Th0): Helper T cells that haven't encountered antigens yet.

    • Characteristics: Have T-cell receptors (TCRs) and CD4 proteins on their surface.
    • Activation: An antigen-MHC class II complex on an antigen-presenting cell (e.g., macrophage, dendritic cell) can activate a naive Th cell by interacting with both TCR and CD4.
    • Differentiation: The activated T cell differentiates into either a TH1 or TH2 cell.
  • Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ): A cytokine involved in TH1 immunity. A significant percentage (78%) of T cells produce this cytokine.
