Study Notes
T Cell Subsets
-
TH1:
- Immunity: Cell-mediated
- Function: Activates macrophages and CD8+ T cells
- Cytokines: IL-2, IFN-γ, lymphotoxin β
- Result: Cytotoxicity; delayed hypersensitivity
-
TH2:
- Immunity: Humoral (antibody-mediated)
- Function: Activates B cells, promotes class switching
- Cytokines: IL-4, 5, 10, & 13
- Result: Secretion of antibodies
-
Naive T cells (Th0): Helper T cells that haven't encountered antigens yet.
- Characteristics: Have T-cell receptors (TCRs) and CD4 proteins on their surface.
- Activation: An antigen-MHC class II complex on an antigen-presenting cell (e.g., macrophage, dendritic cell) can activate a naive Th cell by interacting with both TCR and CD4.
- Differentiation: The activated T cell differentiates into either a TH1 or TH2 cell.
-
Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ): A cytokine involved in TH1 immunity. A significant percentage (78%) of T cells produce this cytokine.
