    Study Notes

    System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

    • SDLC is a process for understanding how an Information System (IS) can support business needs, designing the system, building it, and delivering it to users.
    • The SDLC generally consists of four fundamental phases: Planning, Analysis, Design, and Implementation.
    • The phases can follow sequentially, iteratively, concurrently, or in a different order depending on the project.

    Planning Phase

    • The planning phase answers the question "Why should we build a system?"
    • Planning involves two steps: Project Initiation and Project Approval.

    Project Initiation

    • The system request document explains the business reasons for building the system and its potential value.
    • It is suggested and performed by the project sponsor and submitted to the approval committee.
    • It includes:
      • Project sponsor - the primary contact for the project.
      • Business need - the reason for building the system.
      • Business requirements - the capabilities the system will provide.
      • Business value - the benefits the system will create.
      • Special issues or constraints - relevant issues regarding implementation.

    Project Approval

    • The Information System department conducts a feasibility analysis with the system request department.
    • Feasibility analysis examines technical, economic, and organizational feasibility of the project.
    • Technical Feasibility considers factors like familiarity with the application and technology, project size, and compatibility with existing software and hardware.
    • Economic Feasibility evaluates development costs, tangible and intangible benefits and costs, annual operating costs, and annual benefits.
    • Organizational Feasibility assesses user acceptance and alignment of project goals with business objectives.
    • The system request and feasibility analysis documents are submitted for project approval.
    • Once approved, the project proceeds to project management with staff assignment and a work plan.

    Project Selection

    • A revised system request is submitted to the approval committee after the feasibility analysis is complete.
    • The approval committee evaluates the business need, risk, and the organizational portfolio which includes all projects categorized by size and risk.
    • The committee decides to proceed with building the project, reject it, or put it on hold.
