Symptoms of Anemia
- Fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath
- Headaches, pale skin, and lower blood pressure
- Iron-Deficiency Anemia: pica (eating non-food substances), brittle nails, cold hands and feet

Diagnosis of Anemia
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) test
- Physical exam and family history
- Blood smear or differential to count white blood cells and check red blood cell shape
- Reticulocyte count to check for immature red blood cells
- Levels of vitamin B12 and folate tests
- Special blood tests to detect rare causes of anemia
- Bilirubin test and other blood and urine tests to determine red blood cell lifespan
Treatment of Anemia
- Hemolytic Anemia: tailored to the underlying cause, may require surgery or medication
- Sickle Cell Anemia: bone marrow transplant or hydroxyurea medication to stimulate alternate hemoglobin formation
- Lead poisoning: discontinuing exposure to lead and administering a lead-removing drug
- Nursing Care: following a healthy diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and avoiding exposure to chemicals
