- Based on studies of women who miscarried, parents of newborns, and mothers at risk
- Focuses on a nurturing way of relating to an individual
- Includes five caring processes
- Aims to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.
- Presence is a key component, whether one-on-one interaction or quiet presence, helping patients feel safe and eliciting needed information.
- Improves job satisfaction in nursing staff by reducing workplace stress.
Caring Processes
- Knowing: Striving to understand an event's meaning in the other's life. Subdimensions include avoiding assumptions, centering on the cared-for, assessing thoroughly, seeking clues, engaging the self/other, and clearly understanding the event.
- Being with: Emotional presence to the other. Subdimensions include being there, conveying ability, sharing feelings, not burdening, comforting, and conveying a sense of care.
- Doing for: Acting for the other as you would for yourself, if possible.. Subdimensions include anticipating, performing skillfully, protecting, preserving dignity, informing/explaining, and meeting needs if possible.
- Enabling: Facilitating the other's passage through life changes (e.g., birth, death). Subdimensions include supporting/allowing, helping with transitions, and promoting the well-being of the patient.
- Maintaining belief: Supporting the other's ability to manage a situation and face the future. Subdimensions include focusing, generating alternatives, validating/giving feedback, believing in/holding in esteem, maintaining hope/realistic optimism, "going the distance," and fostering resilience.
