Sustainable Development Goal 15: Preserving Ecosystems and Land

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 focuses on preserving forests, combating desertification, halting land degradation, and halting biodiversity loss. This goal is particularly crucial because it addresses the issue of ecosystems decline which has been one of the major concerns over recent times. One specific area highlighted within SDG 15 is sustainable land management. By implementing this, there will be more efficient ways to manage agricultural lands, forestry, mining, fisheries, water management, urban planning, and tourism development. There are several key measures identified under SDG 15 target 7 for achieving sustainable land management. These include promoting environmentally sound chemical management practices, reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse strategies; encouraging sustainable public procurement practices, and protecting natural habitats by avoiding pollution, resource extraction and other negative impacts where they occur outside national boundaries. In addition, governments need to implement effective institutions and governance structures to ensure accountability at all levels of decision making. All these initiatives underline the importance of ensuring food security and environmental sustainability while addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation issues.
