Suspended Baskets Safety Requirements

General Safety Requirements

• Suspended baskets must conform to the safety requirements and/or protective measures outlined in this standard.
• Suspended baskets must be manufactured from incombustible materials.

Structural Requirements

• The minimum free standing height of the suspended basket where persons are intended to stand is 2 m.
• The roof of the basket must be able to withstand the impact of a 7 kg steel ball falling from a height of 2 m without plastic deformations exceeding 50 mm.
• Any aperture in the roof of the basket must have dimensions that prevent a sphere with a diameter of 20 mm from passing through.

Corrosion Protection

• Suspended baskets must be protected against corrosion.

Strength Calculations

• When calculating the rated capacity of the suspended basket, the weight of each person must be taken as at least 80 kg plus at least 40 kg of equipment for each person.
• The loading considered must be increased with a factor of at least 2 when used in the design calculation.

Load Lifting Attachments

• Suspended baskets must be attached to the crane hook with flexible load lifting attachments consisting of steel wire rope slings or chain slings.
• Steel wire rope slings must comply with EN 13414-1, and chain slings must comply with EN 818-4, with an enhanced safety factor of at least:
  • 10 × (weight of basket + rated capacity) for steel wire ropes
  • 8 × (weight of basket + rated capacity) for chains
• Load lifting attachments must be fitted to the basket in such a way that they can only be removed with tools.

Floor Requirements

• The floor of the basket must be maintained in position to the frame by welding or some other equally effective means (e.g. bolted).
• The floor of the basket must be slip resistant.
• The floor of the basket must have drainage.
