Study Notes
- Eight instrument classifications: suction, suturing, dilators, cutting/dissecting, clamping/occluding, grasping/holding, retracting/viewing, probing and dilating
Materials
- Most modern surgical instruments are made of stainless steel
- Titanium allows instruments to be stronger and lighter in weight
Instrument Finishes
- Instrument finishes include high polish, satin, and ebonized
Cutting/Dissecting Instruments
- Contain one or more sharp edges
- Used for incision, sharp dissection, or excision of tissue
Grasping/Holding Instruments
- Designed to manipulate tissue
Clamping/Occluding Instruments
- Designed to occlude or constrict tissue
- Features: Ring handles, a ratchet, and two shanks that connect the ringed handles
Retracting/Viewing Instruments
- Designed to expose the operative site
Suturing Instruments
- Needle driver/holder is used to hold a curved suture needle for suturing
Suction Function
- Removal of blood and body fluids to provide better visualization
Micro Instruments
- Used to perform microsurgery- operating a microscope
Proper Instrument Handling
- Handling instruments with care prevents injury, extends instrument life, and allows correct and consistent performance
Instrument Sets
- Grouping specific tools needed for a particular procedure and to sterilize
Instrument Count Sheet
- Lists the type and number of instruments in a set- to minimize errors in surgery
Endoscope Function
- Used for diagnosis, biopsy, visualization, and/or repair
Powered Instruments
- Powered by compressed air, nitrogen, electricity, or battery
Pneumatic Tourniquet
- In the OR, blood loss is minimized and visualization is improved
Catheters
- Urinary catheters are used to drain urine and track output
- Intravascular (IV) catheters infuse fluids, obtain a diagnosis, and monitor body functions
Tubes
- Gastrointestinal tubes are used to aspirate air and fluids from the gastrointestinal tract
- Airway tubes are used to maintain openness of the upper respiratory tract
- Chest tubes evacuate air or fluids from the chest
- Examples: NG, Endotracheal
Drains
- Used to evacuate air and fluids from a surgical or traumatic wound
- Passive drains rely on gravity to drain fluids
- Active drains use negative pressure or suction to drain fluids
