Flashcards
Maxillary Lateral Incisor
Maxillary Lateral Incisor
A tooth in the upper jaw next to the central incisor, assisting in cutting food, speech, and lip support.
Labial Aspect of Lateral Incisor
Labial Aspect of Lateral Incisor
The front surface of the maxillary lateral incisor, trapezoid-shaped with a convex mesial outline and more convex distal outline.
Incisal Outline
Incisal Outline
The cutting edge of the maxillary lateral incisor, rounded rather than straight, with a rounded mesio-incisal and disto-incisal angles.

Study Notes
Maxillary Lateral Incisor
- Number: Two
- Contact: Mesial side contacts the maxillary central incisor, distal side contacts the maxillary canine.
- Function: Cutting food, speech, and support for lips; supplements central incisor function.
- General Characteristics: Similar to the upper central incisor but smaller, more rounded, and with a root length similar to or potentially longer.
Chronology of Development
- Dental Organ Appearance: 5 months
- Calcification: 10-12 months
- Crown Completion: 5-6 years
- Eruption: 8-9 years
- Root Completion: 11-12 years
Labial Aspect
- Geometric Outline: Trapezoid, short side is cervical, long side is incisal.
- Mesial Outline: Convex, more so than the upper central incisor, contact area at the junction of incisal and middle thirds.
- Distal Outline: More convex than the mesial outline; contact area at the middle third.
- Incisal Outline: Not straight, rounded mesio-incisal and disto-incisal angles (more rounded than the mesio-incisal angle of a central incisor).
- Cervical Line: Convex toward the root.
- Elevations in Surface Anatomy: Labial surface is convex, maximum convexity at the cervical third (cervical ridge). Three mamelons in newly erupted teeth.
- Depressions in Surface Anatomy: Two developmental grooves separate three lobes (mesio-labial and disto-labial developmental grooves).
Root
- Tapering: Labial and lingual outlines taper gradually to the apical third where it curves distally.
- Apex: More pointed (sharp) than the upper central incisor.
Crown
- Broadest Anterior Teeth: The broadest of the anterior teeth.
- Longest Crown: The longest crown of all human teeth
- Dimensions: Crown is smaller than the central incisor in dimensions except the root.
Mesial Aspect
- Contact Area: At the junction of incisal and middle thirds.
- Cervical Line Curvature: Concave toward the root
- Root Apex: Centralized with a pointed end.
- Line Bisecting: Tooth passes from the root apex to the incisal ridge.
- Crown: Crown is long, large
- Contact Area: At I 1/3 near the M I angle
Distal Aspect
-
- Similar to mesial: Similar to the mesial aspect except for the following features.
- Cervical Line: Shallower.
- Depression: Developmental grooves (depression) on root.
- Contact Area: Middle third.
- Distal Contact Area: At the center of the crown.
Incisal Aspect
- Similar to Upper Central: Similar to the upper central incisor, but smaller in size.
- Meso-distal and Labiolingual Dimensions: Mesio-distal dimension is nearly equal to the labiolingual dimension.
- Labiolingual Dimension: Labiolingual dimension is thicker than the upper central incisor due to a well-developed cingulum and cervical ridge.
- Palatal Pit: When present, located between the cingulum and lingual fossa.
Incisal Aspect (Geometric Outline)
- Geometric Outline: Triangular (but smaller than central).
- M-D vs Lab-Ling: M-D dimension is greater than Lab-Ling.
- Outlines: Labial and lingual outlines are rounded (due to well-developed cervical ridge and cingulum).
Pulp Cavity
- Similarities/Differences to Central Incisor: Similar to the central incisor, but smaller.
- Pulp Chamber (Mesio-distal Section): Wide, conforming to the shape of the crown (trapezoid). Three pulp horns corresponding to the three mamelons.
Pulp Cavity (Labio-Lingual Section)
-
- Pointed Incisally: Pointed incisally, then follows an increase in dimension cervically (until the cervical line level).
- Root Canal: Tapers gradually; ends in a constriction at the root apex (apical foramen).
Clinical Considerations
- Variations: Congenitally missing, peg lateral, lingual pit, groove, and tubercle.
