Study Notes
Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD)
- SRSD combines explicit instruction and cognitive/metacognitive strategies to support students' academic needs across different subjects.
- Evidence-based practices like explicit instruction and cognitive/metacognitive strategies improve outcomes for students with specific learning disabilities (SLD).
- Systematic explicit instruction leads to better academic results for students with and at risk for learning disabilities.
- SRSD is an instructional framework that uses direct instruction in learning and self-regulation strategies.
- Learning strategies are specific to the subject matter, while self-regulation supports using these strategies for tasks.
SRSD Stages of Instruction
- Teachers may adjust the order of stages within SRSD to meet student needs.
- Reworking the steps already learned is an acceptable strategy, depending on the student.
- Stage 1: Develop and activate background knowledge to ensure students have the necessary prior knowledge and skills.
- Stage 2: Discuss the learning strategies to build students' motivation and understanding of their significance. Students create goals.
- Stage 3: Teachers model the learning strategies and self-regulation skills, explaining their thinking process (think-alouds).
- Stage 4: Memorization of the strategy steps. Teachers use various methods of assessment for memorizing the steps.
- Stage 5: Students practice the learning and self-regulation strategies with support, like collaborative work, prompting, and guidance. Gradually decrease assistance as students become more independent.
- Stage 6: Students use the learning and self-regulation strategies independently without visual aids for independent practice.
SRSD for Reading and Writing
- POW+TREE is a writing strategy to start tasks (Pick my idea, Organize my notes, Write more and say more) and TREE helps students remember the parts of an opinion essay (Topic, Reasons, Explanations, Ending).
- SRSD is effective for various writing genres, including opinion essays.
- TRAP is a reading strategy used with expository texts (Think, Read, Ask, Paraphrase). Students 'think' about the topic before reading, read the paragraph, name the main idea and details, then paraphrase.
- SRSD improves summarization, and identifying main idea in expository texts for upper elementary, middle, and high school students with reading difficulties.
SRSD for Mathematics
- FAST DRAW is a problem-solving strategy (Find, Ask, Set up, Tie down, Discover, Read, Answer, Write) for mathematics word problems. Students focus on important parts to follow the steps through to solving.
- Research shows SRSD is effective for teaching math problem-solving strategies for addition and subtraction word problems.
