Study Notes
Substance Use Disorder in the UAE (2015)
- Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a global problem, affecting individuals in the Arabian Peninsula. Data from this region is limited.
- This study examined SUD patterns in a UAE cohort (250 male patients) at the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) in Abu Dhabi. A comparison group (239 males from the Emirates Family Registry (EFR)) was also used.
- Poly-substance use was prevalent (84.4% of the cohort), with various combinations across age groups.
- Opioids (especially Tramadol for younger patients (<30 years) and heroin for older patients (≥30)) and alcohol were the most common substances used.
- Pharmaceutical medications like Pregabalin, Procyclidine, and Carisoprodol were also commonly misused, particularly among younger patients.
- Smoking and marital status were significantly correlated with SUD in the cohort.
- The majority of participants (95.6%) were current smokers, in contrast to 19.7% of the comparison group. More than half the patients (58.4%) were never married.
- The study highlights the need for targeted prevention programs to address poly-substance use patterns and the rising use of prescription medication, especially among younger patients.
- Specific prevention and intervention strategies, targeting demographic differences, are needed to effectively address the SUD problem.
Methods
- 250 male patients at the NRC and 239 males from the EFR.
- Data collected via questionnaires and interviews.
- Ethical approval was obtained from the NRC and Human Research Ethics Committee at University of Western Australia.
- Data included demographics, substance use history, medical conditions and clinical status.
- Statistical analysis used STATA software.
- P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Results
- Mean age of 29.6 years for the study cohort (minimum: 18; maximum: 62).
- Significant correlations between substance use, smoking and marital status identified.
- High proportion of poly-substance use
- Significant difference in substance use patterns between younger and older patients (under 30 vs. over 30)
- Opioid use (especially Tramadol in younger group and Heroin in older group)
- High consumption of prescribed medications (Pregabalin, Procyclidine, Carisoprodol) mainly by the younger group (<30 years).
