### Sentence Structure Study Notes

•  A sentence is a group of words which contains a subject and a verb, and expresses a complete thought.
•  Everything that happens in life, natural occurrences, historical events, conflicts, thoughts, feelings, opinions, ideas, experiences are expressed in sentences.
•  A sentence connects a main idea with an action or links it to other words in order to state a thought.
•  Children talk in sentences long before they learn to read.
•  Spoken sentences are a fundamental part of human communication.
•  A sentence contains a subject and verb that expresses a complete thought.

### Parts of a Sentence

•  Subjects are the main idea in a sentence.
•  Verbs express an action performed by the subject.
• Verbs can also link other ideas in a sentence.

### Types of Sentences

•  Independent clauses are groups of related words that, by themselves, express a complete thought.
•  Dependent clauses contain a subject and verb, but don't express a complete thought on their own.
•  Sentences need at least one independent clause.

### Parts of Speech

•  Nouns name persons, places, ideas, or things.
•  Pronouns take the place of nouns: they, him, she etc.
•  Verbs express action or state of being.
•  Adjectives describe nouns or pronouns.
•  Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
•  Prepositions show relationships between words.
•  Conjunctions connect words or phrases.
•  Interjections express emotion.

### Subject-Verb Agreement

•  Singular subjects need singular verbs.

• Plural subjects need plural verbs.

•  The subject should agree with the verb tense.
