Zayd's Story
- Zayd ibn Harithah was a boy from the Qahtani branch of the Arabs, not the Adnani branch, and he was from a tribe of Yemen.
- His mother and father were from two different tribes that had a love-hate relationship, which led to a small fight between them, resulting in Zayd's kidnapping and sale into slavery by his mother's relatives.
Zayd's Slavery
- Zayd was sold in the largest marketplace, which took place after the Hajj season, to Khadija's nephew.
- Khadija gifted Zayd to the Prophet PBUH when she married him, before Islam.
The Reunion
- Zayd's father, Haritha, was searching for his son and finally found him with the Prophet PBUH.
- The Prophet PBUH gave Zayd the choice to return to his father or stay with him.
- Zayd chose to stay with the Prophet PBUH, saying, "I can never choose anyone over you, for you are to me more than a father and an uncle combined."
The Adoption
- The Prophet PBUH adopted Zayd and announced to the people of Makkah, "I want you all to testify that from now on, Zayd is a free man, and I have adopted him as my son."
- Zayd became known as Zayd ibn Muhammad, indicating that he was the son of the Prophet PBUH.
The Revelation
- Later, Allah revealed Surah al-Ahzab verse 5, which says, "Call children by their fathers. This is more just in the sight of Allah."
- After this revelation, the Prophet PBUH changed Zayd's name back to Zayd ibn Harithah.
