Intergroup Bias
- Stereotypes: beliefs that certain attributes are characteristic of members of a particular group, categorizing people based on group membership rather than individual traits.
- Stereotyping involves thinking about a person as a group member, projecting group beliefs onto the individual.
Prejudice
- An attitude or affective response (positive or negative) toward a group and its individual members.
- Prejudice is the attitude aspect of intergroup bias.
Discrimination
- Favorable or unfavorable treatment of individuals based on their membership in a particular group.
- Discrimination is the behavioral aspect of intergroup bias.
Relationship between Stereotyping, Prejudice, and Discrimination
- These three concepts often go together, but don't necessarily have to.
- It's possible to be prejudiced without discriminating (e.g., avoiding social or legal repercussions).
- It's also possible to discriminate without prejudice (e.g., Jewish parents not allowing their kids to marry outside the faith to preserve cultural heritage).
