Stems

• Function: Support and transport of water, nutrients, and sugars between roots and leaves
• Structure:
  • Made up of three types of tissues: epidermis, cortex, and vascular tissue
  • Vascular tissue composed of xylem and phloem
  • Xylem: transports water and minerals from roots to leaves
  • Phloem: transports sugars and nutrients from leaves to roots and other parts of the plant
• Types of stems:
  • Herbaceous stems: non-woody, soft, and green (e.g., grasses, flowers)
  • Woody stems: hard, thick, and brown (e.g., trees, shrubs)
  • Stem modifications: rhizomes (underground stems), stolons (above-ground stems), and tubers (enlarged stems for storage)

Roots

• Function: Absorption of water and nutrients from the soil, anchorage, and storage
• Structure:
  • Taproot: a single main root that grows straight down into the soil (e.g., carrots, beets)
  • Fibrous roots: multiple branching roots that spread out in all directions (e.g., grasses, wheat)
  • Root hairs: small, hair-like projections that increase the surface area for absorption
• Types of roots:
  • Adventitious roots: roots that arise from stems or leaves (e.g., ivy, orchids)
  • Prop roots: roots that grow from the stem above ground and into the soil (e.g., corn, banyan trees)
  • Storage roots: roots that store food and nutrients (e.g., sweet potatoes, cassava)
