Steering Methods and Components Overview

Various methods to control a ship's steering include SCC, ASU, LCU's, FADPU, Emergency Hand Pump.

Four HPUs provide power to move the rudders for steering.

Four LCU's are found in the fwd bulkhead of Compt. 4-442-0-E for each HPU.

Two Rams move hydraulic fluid to rotate rudders through the Rapson slide linkage.

Located between 1A and 1B HPU, they allow manual steering with 30 turns = 1 degree.

An autopilot mode that allows entering heading orders for normal operation.

Manual control of rudders using the steering wheel assembly, bypassing GEDMS.

Uses FDPU's electric motor-driven pump for filling, flushing hydraulic oil for emergency steering.

5-200 ton R-134a York centrifugal A/C units are onboard the ship, located in various areas including Aux 1, Aux 2, and Shaft Alley.

Pumps located in Aux 1, Aux 2, and Shaft Alley, responsible for moving chilled water throughout the ship.

Three tanks located in Aux 1, Aux 2, and Shaft Alley, used to accommodate the expansion of chilled water in the system.

The largest system on the ship, supplying 44° chilled water for various equipment and returning warmed water to AC plants for re-cooling.

Two 1.5 ton R-134a York rotary refrigeration units located on Reefer decks, used for cooling spaces and products.

Shreds biodegradable material from the trash room and disposes it overboard beyond 3 nautical miles.

Reverse Osmosis distilling plant with a maximum capacity of 12,000 gallons per day per unit, totaling 24,000 gallons daily.

Feedwater is drawn from the fire main system and processed through filters to the RO module for seawater distillation into potable water.
