Fabrication, Erection, Inspection and Maintenance of Other Steel Structures
- Inspection of steel structures should be carried out by the Bridge Inspector at a frequency decided by the Chief Engineer (Bridges).
- The Bridge Inspector shall maintain a structural steel inspection register to record the results of the inspection, which should be submitted to the Assistant Engineer (Bridges) / Divisional Engineer (Bridges) by the specified date.
Inspection by Bridge Inspector
- The Bridge Inspector shall inspect the steel structures, including fabrication and erection, in the workshop and on-site, at a frequency decided by the Chief Engineer (Bridges).
- The Bridge Inspector shall record the results of the inspection in the structural steel inspection register.
- Any defects or repairs required shall be reported and action taken to rectify them.
Inspection by Assistant Engineer (Bridges) / Divisional Engineer (Bridges)
- The Assistant Engineer (Bridges) / Divisional Engineer (Bridges) shall inspect the steel structures mentioned in Section 901, once in five years, and record the results of the inspection in the structural steel inspection register.
- The Bridge Inspector shall accompany the Assistant Engineer (Bridges) / Divisional Engineer (Bridges) during the inspection.

- During the inspection of steel structures, the following points should be examined:
- Condition of foundation base of piers.
- Condition and tightness of foundation bolts.
- Condition of steel work in piers, wind bracings, railings, and other fittings.
- Condition of rivets, nuts, and bolts connecting the girders to the pier.
- Level and alignment of the girders and tracks.
- Condition of fasteners connecting the rails to the sleepers.
- Condition of girders in girder bridges.
- Condition of steel work in steel bridges.
- Condition of paint and coatings.
