Statistics
- The science of collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing and interpreting data
- Used to draw judgments and help with decision-making
Descriptive Statistics
- Organizes, summarizes, and describes quantitative data
- Seeks to simply describe data
Inferential Statistics
- Makes judgments or conclusions about a population based on sample data
Statistical Terms
- Population or Universe: The entire group of objects, persons, places, or things being studied. All members of a particular group.
- Sample: A subset of the population.
- Data: Facts, figures, and information collected about a population or sample.
- Ungrouped (or raw) data: Data that is not organized in a specific way. It's simply the collected data.
- Grouped Data: Raw data is organized into groups or categories with corresponding frequencies. This is called a frequency distribution.
- Parameter: A descriptive measure of a characteristic of a population.
- Statistic: A measure of a characteristic of a sample.
- Constant: A characteristic or property common to all members of a population or sample.
- Variable: Any characteristic, number, or quantity that can be measured or counted. Also called a data item. Examples are age, sex, income, expenses, country of birth, capital expenditure, class grades, eye color, and vehicle type.
Data Collection Methods
- Primary Data: Data collected during the process of investigation. This is data collected directly from the source.
- Secondary Data: Data that was collected by another organization but is used by the investigator.
