Solids
Solids possess a fixed shape and volume because their constituent particles, known as atoms or molecules, maintain tight binding arrangements. This arrangement offers solids characteristics like rigidity, hardness, strength, and high density compared to other states. Examples abound such as metal bars, ice cubes, and glass windows.
Liquids
In contrast to solids, liquids do not have rigid shapes but rather take up the form of any container they occupy due to cohesive forces between neighboring molecules. However, unlike gases, liquids cannot expand or contract without changing the size of their vessel. Common examples include water, oil, mercury, and honey.
Liquids share some properties with both solids and gases. For instance, liquids do not flow unless subjected to external pressure; however, when this happens, they will move and fill available spaces. Usually, they exhibit less viscosity than most solids yet more than gases.
Gases
Gaseous matter expands freely to fill the entire space it occupies. Its molecules are far apart and only experience weak intermolecular attractions.
