Study Notes
Armature Core
- Holds windings in place, made of iron to enhance magnetic field strength.
12 Volt Starting System
- Components include battery, ignition switch, wires, starter motor, solenoid, Bendix drive, flywheel.
Commutator
- Composed of insulated metal strips or bars, flips electrical flow, ensuring alternating current flow.
Engine Starting System
- Similar to 12 Volt Starting System with additional components such as ECM (Engine Control Module) in some cases.
Field Windings
- Large insulated stationary wires wrapped around pole shoes to aid in magnetic field generation.
Ignition Switch
- Operates the solenoid, closing the circuit to engage the starter motor.
Magnetic Field
- Defined as the area around a magnet that exerts magnetic force.
Neutral Safety Switch
- Ensures engine does not crank unless transmission is in neutral or park position for safety.
Overrunning Clutch
- Locks pinion gear in one direction while allowing it to release in the opposite direction.
Starting Motor
- Transforms electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy to successfully crank the engine.
Starter Solenoid
- An electro-mechanical device that engages the pinion gear with the engine's flywheel or drive plate.
Starter Relay
- Controls the high-voltage circuit connecting to the starter, opening or closing as needed.
Solenoid Disc
- Completes the battery-to-starter circuit by contacting both high-current terminals.
Gear Reduction Starter
- Specifically designed to crank high compression engines or diesel engines effectively.
Pole Shoes
- Essential components that create a magnetic field to amplify magnetism between them.
Pinion Gear
- A small gear on the armature shaft that engages with the larger ring gear of the engine flywheel.
Permanent Magnet
- Made of ferromagnetic material capable of maintaining aligned magnetic domains for permanent magnetism.
Starter Actuated Solenoid
- Features a plunger that activates a shift lever to connect with the pinion gear, facilitating engagement.
Starter Armature
- Comprised of the armature shaft, core, commutator, and armature windings, integral to motor function.
Solenoid Windings
- When the ignition key is turned to start, a small current flows through this, creating a magnetic field that engages the solenoid and completes the circuit to the starter.
