Stages of Reading Development

  • Stage 0: Pre-reading "I want" is the earliest stage, occurring from 6 months to 6 years old, where the child demonstrates a desire to learn the language of their environment.

Stage 1: Initial Reading and Decoding "I Start"

  • Occurs from 6 to 7 years old, typically in 1st grade and beginning 2nd grade.
  • The child begins to learn how to read and realizes that different letters correspond to different symbols.

Stage 2: Confirmation and Fluency "I Improve"

  • Takes place from 7 to 8 years old, typically in 2nd and 3rd grade.
  • The child puts into practice whatever skills were learned in Stage 1.

Stage 3: Reading for Learning the New "I Acquire"

  • Occurs from 9 to 14 years old, typically in 4th to 9th grade, divided into two phases:
    • Phase A: 4th to 6th grade (Intermediate)
    • Phase B: 7th to 9th grade (JHS)
