Lymphedema Stages
- Stage 0 (Latent): Lymphatic vessels have undetectable damage, transport capacity is sufficient, and lymphedema is not present.
Early Stages
- Stage 1 (Spontaneously Reversible): Tissue is in "non-pitting" stage, bounces back when pressed, and limb/affected area is almost normal in size.
Advanced Stages
- Stage 2 (Spontaneously Irreversible): Tissue is spongy, "pitting" occurs when pressed, and fibrosis/lymphedema marks the beginning of limb hardening and increasing size.
Severe Stage
- Stage 3 (Lymphostatic Elephantiasis): Swelling is irreversible, limb(s) or affected area is very large, tissue is hard (fibrotic) and unresponsive, and patients may consider reconstructive surgery (debulking).
