Study Notes
Convulsions in Children
- Do not restrain the child, but protect them from injury
- Loosen constrictive clothing
- When the convulsions stop, perform a primary survey
- Give ongoing care; place the child into the best recovery position for their age
- Do not give ASA (e.g. Aspirin) to children or adolescents because it may cause Reye's syndrome, a life-threatening condition
- Do not use cold water when sponging the child - use lukewarm water instead
Opioid Overdose
- Opioids are a class of drug that affect the opioid receptors in the brain and produce a morphine-like effect
- Examples of opioids include morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, codeine, and fentanyl
- Side effects of opioids include nausea, constipation, respiratory depression, sedation, and euphoria
- Opioids are a common drug of abuse among recreational users due to their euphoric side effects
- Fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine and has a very rapid onset, which has made it a leading cause of fatal overdoses among recreational drug users
Frostbite
- Frostbite refers to the freezing of tissues when exposed to temperatures below zero
- There are two stages of frostbite: superficial frostbite and deep frostbite
- Signs and symptoms of superficial frostbite include white, waxy-looking skin, firm skin to the touch, numbness, and cold skin
- First aid for superficial frostbite includes gradual rewarming of the affected part with body heat, covering the affected area with warm hands, and taking measures to prevent the area from freezing again
Labour and Delivery
- Early labour involves muscular contractions that may begin as an aching feeling in the lower back
- As contractions get stronger, they feel like cramps in the lower abdomen
- Contractions cause the cervix to open, or dilate
- The cervix has to dilate until the opening is about 10 cm across before the fetus can be pushed down the birth canal
- Stage 2 of labour usually takes about one hour and involves the fetus being pushed out of the uterus and through the vagina
- Stage 3 of labour is the delivery of the placenta after the baby is born and usually takes ten to twenty minutes
Mental Health Awareness
- Mental health issues can be related to the health of a whole person
- Factors that can affect someone's mental health include critical incident or traumatic event, dementia, mood and psychiatric disorders, and other physical conditions that may mimic the symptoms of a mental health issue or crisis
- The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity"
Occupational Stress Injury
- Occupational stress refers to stress related to one's job
- Signs and symptoms of occupational stress injury include disruption in sleep patterns and fatigue, irritability, lack of interest in food, anxiety or panic, and isolation from co-workers
- Steps to care for occupational stress injuries include recognizing some of the symptoms, examining ways to reduce occupational stressors in life, and seeking medical help if necessary### Stages of Labour
- Early labour involves muscular contractions that start as an aching feeling in the lower back and progress to feeling like cramps in the lower abdomen.
- Contractions cause the cervix to open, or dilate, and must dilate to about 10 cm across before the fetus can be pushed down the birth canal.
Stage 2: Birth of the Baby
- This stage usually takes about one hour and begins when the cervix is fully dilated.
- Contractions push the fetus out of the uterus and through the vagina.
- When the baby's head is close to the vaginal opening, the mother may feel a strong urge to push the fetus out.
- The fetus' head is usually born first, followed by one shoulder, then the other shoulder, and then the rest of the body is pushed out quickly.
Stage 3: Delivery of the Placenta
- This stage involves the delivery of the placenta after the baby is born, usually taking ten to twenty minutes.
- The uterus gets smaller and pushes the placenta out, marking the end of labour when the placenta is delivered.
