Staffing
- Staffing is the process of finding, attracting, and keeping personnel to meet organizational goals.
- Processes include:
- Identifying the number and type of people needed. This involves job descriptions, hiring for new positions, and filling vacancies created by attrition (people leaving).
- Planning how to acquire these people: the process of recruitment
- Selecting qualified candidates through criteria, tests, and interviews.
- Orienting and training new hires on organizational activities and processes, and also for development
- Evaluating employee performance through performance management. This can include end-of-year reviews, constant feedback, promotions, pay increases, and development opportunities.
- Compensating employees fairly, including financial compensation and opportunities for advancement.
Power
- There are five main sources of power:
- Legitimate power: Stemming from a position of authority.
- Reward power: Stemming from the ability to offer rewards for cooperation.
- Coercive power: Stemming from the ability to punish.
- Expert power: Based on the individual's capabilities and reputation.
- Referent power: Based on the charisma of an individual, their qualities that people want to emulate.
Delegation
- Delegation is assigning a task or activity to a subordinate.
- Accountability is when the subordinate is responsible for fulfilling the assigned tasks.
